As part of our new series, “Meet the Expert”, we are highlighting the accomplished leaders who bring deep, real‑world experience in building and running successful cancer and thoracic care programs.
Our first expert, Bob Shaw, is a seasoned healthcare executive who has held senior roles at UT MD Anderson, Norton Healthcare, Stony Brook Medicine, and Memorial Hermann Health System. He led initiatives across clinical integration, physician development, research strategy, M&A, and population health.
A key to Bob’s success is his ability to connect strategy with execution. He understands how cancer center executives think about growth, quality, and financial sustainability, and how new technologies must fit into established workflows to succeed. As President of Norton Cancer Institute, he led the strategic expansion and integration of cancer programs across the health system, aligning multidisciplinary teams, operations, and research around patient-first care and scalable growth. That experience building and integrating comprehensive cancer services shapes how he recognizes innovations that fit seamlessly and improve population-level detection, and enable timely, efficient triage across care pathways.
Now, as a member of Optellum’s advisory board, Bob helps ensure Optellum’s AI-powered lung nodule platform, Virtual Nodule Clinic, delivers tangible value to cancer programs: supporting earlier diagnosis via its FDA approved risk stratification, guiding timely follow-up, and strengthening the entire lung cancer service line from screening through treatment. His perspective keeps the focus on solutions that work for clinicians, patients, and organizational leaders alike.
Bob also serves as a mentor to emerging healthcare/life science leaders, sharing lessons from decades of experience at Rice University's Masters in Entrepreneurship and the University of Houston's Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship (WCE) as well as at OwlSpark/UH Redlabs summer programs, judges at the Rice Business Plan Competition and is an active angel life science investor in the Houston Angel Network. His leadership, insight, and commitment to better cancer care embody what this Meet the Expert series is all about.
