Executive leadership

Dr Johnathan Watkins
Chief Executive Officer
Johnathan joined Optellum in 2021 heading up Clinical Research & Market Access before joining the executive team as Chief Commercial Officer and then CEO. Prior to Optellum, he spent almost four years as a management consultant at McKinsey & Co in their UK healthcare practice, gaining deep expertise in how healthcare systems work and how they can best serve their patients.

He has a PhD in Cancer Bioinformatics from King’s College London and an MA in Genetics from the University of Cambridge.
Dr Thomas Pearson-Jones
Chief Finance & Operating Officer
Thomas joined Optellum in 2024 leading the operations function alongside strategic finance. Thomas started his career in clinical medicine, practising as a doctor in the British Army before joining Goldman Sachs in London in the EMEA Healthcare M&A team. During this time, he gained valuable experience across a range of high-performing teams.

He holds a degree in Medicine from the University of Oxford and an MBA from London Business School.
Quentin Chometon
Chief Product Officer
Quentin joined Optellum in 2017 as a Machine Learning Scientist. He then worked in various product management roles before progressing to his appointment as CTO in 2024. He has led the research and development of some of our key innovations, and has gained a deep understanding of customer needs and how to build products that match these needs.

He has an undergraduate degree in Engineering from Centrale Lille and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
Carlos Arteta
Chief Technology Officer
Carlos joined Optellum in 2017 and leads the research and development team, building the AI and software capabilities that power Optellum's clinical products. His work ranges from foundational AI research to clinically deployed software, with particular interest in computer vision and machine learning in healthcare. He holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford and conducted postdoctoral research in AI across biomedical, environmental, and physical sciences.
Joseph Hewins
General Counsel
Joseph joined Optellum in 2019 having spent more than two decades in legal counsel positions, specializing in commercial and IP law. He spent more than 16 years with Qinetiq, latterly as a Legal & Regulatory Director, during which he developed extensive expertise in legal due diligence, commercial contracting, and regulatory affairs.

He holds a Master’s degree in Law from Nottingham Law School.
Sherie Zhou
Chief Business Officer
Sherie joined Optellum in 2025 as Chief Business Officer, where she leads global business development, US market access, and corporate marketing. She previously held commercial and strategic roles at Viz.ai, an AI-powered care coordination platform, where she stood up the life science business. Prior to that, she was at Strategy& (PwC) where she worked with pharma, provider, and payor clients on growth, GTM strategy, and commercial excellence. She started her career at NSF International, working with medical device companies to navigate the FDA 510k/PMA processes and QMS requirements in order to market innovative products in the US.

She holds a BS in Biology from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

Stephen Johnson
Director
Stephen is an investor at Mercia Ventures who works with software and AI companies operating across both B2B and healthcare applications. He led Optellum’s series A investment round. Prior to joining the fund in 2019 he spent eight years in consulting across business change and data engineering programmes. He is a graduate of Loughborough University where he studied Information Management with Business.
Kevin Lim
Director
Kevin is an entrepreneur-turned strategic investor backing companies that transform medical diagnostics and digital health. Over three decades he has built and exited ventures spanning e-commerce, FinTech media, and property development after early roles consulting on banking and cybersecurity across Asia-Pacific. Since 2015 Kevin has focused on MedTech, serving on the board of Perspectum, Blumaiden Biosciences, and Eyesense AG, and acting as a strategic advisor to Helaxy Inc. He brings strategic know-how in go-to-market, cross-border expansion, and mentorship to leadership teams. He holds a BSc in Computer Science and Management from the University of Liverpool.
Dr Tara Bishop

Dr Tara Bishop is the founder and managing director of Black Opal Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in companies that are transforming healthcare through technology. Prior to launching the fund, Tara served as Chief Medical Officer at Bind Benefits, Medical Director at McKinsey & Co, and was an associate professor of Medicine and Healthcare Policy at Cornell Medical School. She holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from MIT and an MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical School.
Murielle Thinard McLane

Murielle is Managing Partner and the head of Intuitive Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Intuitive Surgical, where she invests in companies shaping the future of minimally invasive care. She has over 20 years of experience building and scaling organizations as an investor, entrepreneur, and Fortune 500 executive, including roles as CEO of Ontera and co-founder of Nooma Bio. Earlier, she helped launch Verana Health while at GE Healthcare Ventures and supported investments in Genome Medical and Arterys. She also held leadership roles at McKesson, Genentech, Novartis, and Optum. Murielle holds an MBA from Wharton and an MS in Finance and Management Science from the Université of Lyon.
John (Wonjoon) Cho

John (Wonjoon) Cho is a Team Leader at Woori Venture Partners, the venture capital arm of Woori Financial Group, one of Korea’s largest financial institutions. John specializes in cross-border investments across international markets. He holds a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and a BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences & Immunology from the University of Toronto.

Meet our Founding Chairman

Prof Sir Michael Brady
Chair & Co-founder
Prof Sir Michael Brady, PhD, serves as Chair of our board of directors and is among the Optellum co-founders.
Prof Brady has been a professor of oncological imaging in the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford since 2010. Before then, Prof Brady was a professor of information engineering at the University of Oxford from 1985 to 2010. Prior to Oxford, Prof Brady was a senior research scientist in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was one of the founders of the Robotics Laboratory.
He is the author of over 750 articles and 26 patents in computer vision, robotics, medical image analysis, and artificial intelligence, and the author or editor of ten books. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors of medical technology companies ScreenPoint Medical BV, since September 2014, Perspectum Ltd, since September 2012 and Naitive Technologies Ltd, since October 2020. He has also served on the board of trustees of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence since 2019.
Prof Brady previously served as a member of the board of directors of medical technology companies Mirada Medical Ltd, from September 2009 to September 2019, Volpara Health Technologies Ltd, from August 2009 to January 2020, Oxford Instruments plc from 1994 to 2014 and AEA Technology plc from 1990 to 1995. Prof Brady received a BSc and MSc in Mathematics from the University of Manchester and a PhD in Mathematics from the Australian National University.
